Peter's put out the Dragons' fire

After a mixed bag of results in the cuppers 5-a-side tournament, the St Peter’s team were not overly confident going into their first 11-a-side game of Trinity against the Dragons team from Royal Holloway.
However, after what seemed like only a matter of minutes, the ever-confident Matt Judge blasted Peter’s into the lead, boosting the spirits of the rest of his team. The dragons were soon to reply though, first with a goal resulting from a defensive mix-up, and then a second after what can only be described as a “fortunate” effort that looped into the roof of the net after a corner.

Unperturbed, Peter’s hit back again after a sublime cross-field ball from the tireless Mike Lomas at left back was met with a neat cross clinically finished by Morgan Griffiths, who troubled the Dragons’ defence all game.

The stunning skill from substitute Rico Lewis capped off what was an entertaining first half for the neutral. After a rousing half-time team talk from out-going Captains Adam “Package” Price and Tom Langridge, the Peter’s side was ready to put the Dragons to the sword in the second half.

However, these hopes were soon dashed after the Dragons scored early on. Peter’s pushed on regardless though, with great work on the right wing from a rejuvenated Yatu Yoga and some near misses from the tricky George Sumner. Finally, with around ten minutes left on the clock, Peter’s stalwart Alaric Smith popped up with one of his trademark three yard finishes, thus sending the match to penalties.

After a neat finish from the Dragon’ first kick-taker, incoming first team captain Adam Bowler attempted to prove his credentials by taking the first kick for Peter’s. His stunning top-corner finish did what it needed to do. ‘Keeper Ogborn then made a great save from the Dragons’ second taker, giving Smith a chance to put Peter’s into the lead. His sweetly taken effort ensured this was the case. After another Dragons’ success, Griffiths secured Peter’s third, and Judge slotted home again, taking the tally to 4-3 in favour of Peter’s. If Ogborn could save the Dragons’ fifth, it would be all over. Rising like a salmon, he plucked the shot out of the air, and was resultantly surrounded by his rejoicing team mates. St Peter’s had won their first game of the term, showing signs of a side that may go far next season.
